I have found that there are many benefits to homeschooling. The most important of these is that I get to really know my kids. I know there likes, dislikes, fears and dreams. It has created a stronger family for us because we have had the time to really bond.
I have chosen to homeschool year round. I don't know about anyone else's kids, but mine get bored and cranky if they have too much time off. It also makes it easier to take time off when family comes to visit or when you want to take a vacation at off times of the year.
You can teach your children in a manner that works best for them. When we first started homeschooling, I tried to use text books in all subjects just like the public school does. I soon discovered that my kids didn't learn well that way. They learn much better reading books about a subject. They learn the same information but a different way. You can choose to use a lot of hands on activities or not use any. The choice is yours.
I know that there are many other benefits to homeschooling. These are just the biggest benefits for us.

Top-level comments on this article: (2 total)Thank you for this article. I homeschooled some of my children for various reasons and times, and the others went through conventional schooling. It can be a wonderful experience for everyone. I found it important though to make sure the children had a wide social group outside the home and we did lots of non book learning as well. I also made sure I had time to myself where I got a break from being teacher, mother, housewife etc.Good on you and all the best.
I'm pro and con on this because it all comes down to the teacher and what is being taught. It can do wonders and be benficial and then again I have seen where it hurts the child. I know of one case where the child has no, yes no outside actiities. 13 and nevr to any school, had relationships, very protected. What happens if these parents are no longer around, when the become adults? Yes and what he is actually learning, one wonders. It seems when you ask you do not get a complete answer. A very difficult plus or minus depending on circumstances.I totally agree with what you have said. Homeschooling can be bad if the parent/teacher does not make the effort to give the kids the opportunity to interact with other people both adults and children on a regular basis.Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my article.
